What is an Easy Read Document?

Easy Read is a way of making written information simpler and easier to understand.

These documents usually use short, clear sentences without difficult words (jargon), and include simple images to help explain the meaning.

Easy Read can be helpful for everybody:

  • Those with English is a second language

  • Find reading and writing difficult

  • Have memory problems

  • Have a disability

What does an Easy Read Peer Review Group do?

The Peer Group is a team of people who check the documents to make sure they clear and easy to understand. They are people with the lived experiences of difficulty understanding written English themselves.

Through the peer review group we get feedback on:

  • layout and design

  • language and readability

  • how well the messages are communicated

  • choice of images and icons.

Peer editing in groups is a great way to ensure that more than one opinion goes into the editing process.

Easy Read Documents are suitable for information or communications relating to:

  • health services

  • disability support services

  • social housing

  • education services

  • public transport

  • justice and family services

  • completing a task, like filling out and
    submitting a form or application.

Easy Read Review Group Guide

1) Let the reviewers take turns reading the resource aloud

2) Break each section of the resource up and re-read aloud

3) Ask open ended questions • What was this section about? • What does this mean? • Were any parts of the text unclear or hard to understand?

4) Make sure to get more than one reviewer’s opinion on everything

5) Underline or highlight any words or sentences that are unclear or difficult to understand

6) Ask the reviewers what they think the words or sentences mean

7) Write down any suggestions the reviewers have

8) Review the photos used in the resource
